Ambipolar Drift in a Turbulent Medium
نویسنده
چکیده
The interstellar magnetic field strength and density are observed to be correlated, but there is a large dispersion in this relation. In particular, the magnetic field is often observed to be weaker than expected. It is usually assumed that the field is frozen into the gas except at very high density and low ionization fraction, in which case ion-neutral drift, or ambipolar diffusion, leads to appreciable slip of the field relative to the neutral gas and tends to make the strength of the field more uniform. The purpose of this paper is to show that ion-neutral drift is significantly faster in a turbulent medium than in a quiescent one. We suggest that this fast ambipolar diffusion can explain the surprisingly low magnetic fieldstrengths sometimes observed in dense interstellar gas. The Inability of Ambipolar Diffusion to set a Characteristic Mass Scale in Molecular Clouds
We investigate the question of whether ambipolar diffusion (ion-neutral drift) determines the smallest length and mass scale on which structure forms in a turbulent molecular cloud. We simulate magnetized turbulence in a mostly neutral, uniformly driven, turbulent medium, using a three-dimensional, two-fluid, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) code modified from Zeus-MP. We find that substantial struct...
متن کاملAmbipolar Drift Heating in Turbulent Molecular Clouds
Although thermal pressure is unimportant dynamically in most molecular gas, the temperature is an important diagnostic of dynamical processes and physical conditions. This is the first of two papers on thermal equilibrium in molecular clouds. We present calculations of frictional heating by ion-neutral (or ambipolar) drift in three–dimensional simulations of turbulent, magnetized molecular clou...
متن کاملTurbulent Diffusion of Magnetic Fields in Weakly Ionized Gas
The diffusion of uni-directional magnetic fields by two dimensional turbulent flows in a weakly ionized gas is studied. The fields here are orthogonal to the plane of fluid motion. This simple model arises in the context of the decay of the mean magnetic flux to mass ratio in the interstellar medium. When ions are strongly coupled to neutrals, the transport of a large–scale magnetic field is dr...
متن کاملMagnetic Transport On The Solar Atmosphere By Turbulent Ambipolar Diffusion
The lower solar atmosphere consists of partially ionized turbulent plasmas harbouring velocity field, magnetic field and current density fluctuations. The correlations amongst these small scale fluctuations give rise to large scale flows and magnetic fields which decisively affect all transport processes. The three fluid system consisting of electrons, ions and neutral particles supports nonide...
متن کاملCan the turbulent galactic dynamo generate large - scale magnetic fields ?
Large-scale magnetic fields in galaxies are thought to be generated by a turbulent dynamo. However the same turbulence also leads to a small-scale dynamo which generates magnetic noise at a more rapid rate. The efficiency of the large-scale dynamo depends on how this noise saturates. We examine this issue taking into account ambipolar drift, which obtains in a galaxy with significant neutral ga...
